Sustainable Manufacturing

For this northern California firm, the use of solvent and glue materials was minimized with no reduction in quality of the firm’s wood product.  Dramatic reductions in glue and solvent use not only reduced the firm’s operating expenses but greatly reduced toxic air emissions, which had created a severe impact within the city.   The new approach addressed critical regulatory concerns, allowing the plant to operate fully without fear of a court-ordered shutdown

Commercializing Bioproducts

In conjunction with EPA and DOD, a new organic solvent cleaner was tested against conventional cleaners using typical Army depot parts as a final step before introduction to the market.   The cleaning effectiveness, health effects from use, and cost impacts were compared between the novel organic cleaner and conventional cleaners.   The extensive testing indicated that the organic cleaner was just as effective, significantly less toxic, and just as inexpensive as conventional cleaners.   With the results, DOD adopted its use throughout its facilities in all three branches of the military.  Today, the cleaner is sold retail in major hardware stores.

Greenhouse Gas Management

To assist this large California natural gas consumer with upcoming cap and trade requirements, the future costs of greenhouse gas allowances were determined based on expected natural gas combustion demand requirements in outlying years. Because the unique situation of this facility was not addressed well under state cap and trade regulations, a series of discussions were orchestrated with the state to modify the current regulation to fairly treat this facility while still meeting the state’s objectives for overall reduction in greenhouse gases.  Meanwhile, a comprehensive strategy was put together to acquire and bid on allowances, to explore inexpensive offsets, and to examine cost-effective energy efficiency improvements, which are expected to reduce emissions by 10-15%.

Biomass Energy

For this northern California, cellulosic biomass-to-energy firm, a business strategy was developed to leverage the unique capabilities of pyrolysis technology that would enable this firm to grow to $100 million dollars in revenue in 5 years.  Market assessments were performed for several biomass feedstocks, including yard waste, manure, and sewer sludge.  Market assessments were also performed to determine the feasibility of selling power or bio-oil, and several discussions were held with major petroleum firms about the possibility of developing a product for them.
